KENYA/ BURUNDI FRIENSDSHIP 10 KM RUN AND 5KM WALK
On the 23rd April 2016 at the Jardin Public Grounds, Bujumbura, the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Burundi in conjunction with representatives of various Kenyan Corporate entities including KCB and Kobil officially launched the registration for the 10KM run and 5Km walk.
The Mayor of Bujumbura municipality, Freddy Mbonimpa was the Chief Guest. Others who witnessed the launch were representatives of the Missions/Embassies of East African member states in Burundi; Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda; government officials from the office of the 1st Vice President, National Assembly, Burundi Tourism office, Ministry of Sports, women traders from Rohero Commune . The event attracted about 500 people who after the launch walked the five kilometres with the Mayor and the sponsors (KCB, ECONET-LEO, and KOBIL).
The run/walk is intended to enhance the cordial relationship that exists between the people of Kenya and Burundi and to promote peace in Burundi. The donations/funds that will be raised will be donated to SOS Children homes “Umutima Foundation” and to settle and support street children in Burundi.
The main event to be held on 4th June 2016 is expected to attract at least 10,000 participants. There will be prices ranging from 2 million to 250,000 Burundi Francs to be won for both 10 km and 5km runs.
The Embassy is calling on as many of those who love peace for Burundi to register and donate generously towards this noble event.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Pascal Nyabenda had a meeting on Wednesday, 16th March 2016, with the Ambassador of Kenya to Burundi, Amb.Kenneth Vitisia. They discussed the creation of a parliamentary friendly group between the Burundia and Kenya Parliament.
Addressing the press, after the courtesy call, Pascal Nyabenda reported that he appreciated the Kenyan ambassador for the way he responded to the Burundian crisis, particularly during the attempted coup that occurred on 13th May 2015. According to Hon. Nyabenda, the Kenyan Ambassador was the first to suggest that "Kenya Airways" should resume its operations in Bujumbura International Airport, after the temporary suspension of flights. He also went to the airport to witness the resumption of Kenya Airways flights.
Ambassador Vitisia gave an example of the experience of what his country went through when foreign countries stopped their financial support. Currently, the country finances her state budget for more than 90% through local revenue. Amb. Vitoria promised to share similar experiences with Burundi. Finally, the two personalities exchanged modalities on the establishment of a Parliamentary Friendly Group between the Burundi and Kenya parliamentarians. Members of Parliament from Kenya are planning to visit Burundi in June 2016. A sporting activity will be organized by the Kenyan Parliament.
10TH EAST AFRICAN JUDO CHAMPIONSHIP IN BUJUMBURA
The Kenya National team for Judo Association was invited for the East African Judo championship tournament in Burundi. The tournament was held from 24th to 28th February, 2016.Kenya performed quite well and won 5 five gold medals and 8 bronze medals. The team was hosted for lunch by the Ambassador at the Chancery on Sunday 28th February 2016.
VISIT TO BURUNDI BY KENYA’S SENATE SPEAKER, HON. EKWEE ETHURO 20th – 25th FEBRUARY 2016
The Speaker of Kenya’s Senate and leader of the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU) Hon. Ekwee Ethuro, and Senator Peter Mositet visited Burundi for a fact finding Mission Organized by IPU in conjunction with the ICCGLR Parliamentary Forum.
The team comprised representatives from Cameroon, Uganda, DRC, and Kenya. The team held meetings with President Nguruziza, Burundi National Assembly/Senate, government officials, opposition party members, AU liaison office representatives, ICGLR diplomatic, representative of the UN security members and the civil Society. Upon completion of their mission, the team is expected to come up with a report containing proposed solutions to resolve the ongoing crisis.
The team paid a courtesy call at the Embassy and was hosted for lunch at the ambassador’s residence.

MASHUJAA DAY CELEBRATIONS
Kenyans living in Burundi celebrated Mashujaa Day on 17th October 2015 at Kenya Embassy premises. Amb. Ken Vitisia, Charge d’Affairs and members of staff of the Kenya Embassy attended the celebrations.
During the celebration, the Association of Kenyans Living in Burundi (AKB) held their Annual General Meeting and elections of office bearers. AKB exercises and embraces democratic practices by holding elections for its leaders after every one year as per the Association’s Constitution. During the elections, the following officials were elected:

3. Secretary Collins Kinanja
4. Treasurer Samora Kariuki
5. Organizing Secretary John Mulungye

In addition, AKB awarded Certificates of Appreciation to Kenyans for their untiring efforts and contributions as well as to KBBA as Executive Committee members.
KENYA DIASPORA SOCIAL DAY
On Saturday, 23rd May 2015, Amb. Ken Vitisia, Charge d’Affaires hosted approximately 100 Kenyans and their families to a Kenya Diaspora Social Day function. The purpose of the get-together was to bring Kenyans resident in Burundi together and to calm their apprehensions particularly after having witnessed recent violent incidences associated with the demonstrations and the coup attempt. The Charge d’Affaires used the occasion to inform Kenyans of the Kenya Government’s concern for their safety and assured them of protection and possible evacuation should the situation deteriorate further. Although the situation is now calm, he however urged those who felt insecure to make arrangements to leave Burundi at least on a temporary basis. Many felt the situation did not warrant their evacuation and took issue with those who had started the initiative ‘Okoa Wakenya Burundi’, an initiative that spread fear and concern in Kenya about their safety.
So far, no Kenyan has been a victim of the crisis and those who wished to leave Burundi were facilitated by the Embassy to do so. The Embassy issued over 15 Emergency Certificates to some of them.
Kenya Airways resumed flights to Bujumbura on Wednesday, 13th May 2015 after suspension caused by the attempted coup in Burundi. At the airport to receive the flight was Amb. OPENING OF THE NEW CHANCERY OF THE EMBASSY OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA IN BUJUMBURA ON 1ST MAY 2015
The Principal Secretary, Dr. Eng. Karanja Kibicho presided over a function organized by the Kenya Embassy in Bujumbura to open the new Chancery which the Mission shifted in February, 2014. The guests invited to the event included the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of External Relations and International Cooperation of the Republic of Burundi, the President of the Electoral Commission (CENI) of Burundi, Diplomatic corps and Kenyan nationals residing in Burundi, amongst others.
During the occasion, the Principal Secretary presented to CENI President a donation of 150 laptops from IEBC as technical support towards the forthcoming national elections in Burundi scheduled for May and June, 2015.
The Principal Secretary also presented, a cheque worth US$ 6,000 to the Director General, Ministry of External Relations and International Cooperation of the Republic of Burundi, a contribution from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade for the Burundian Foreign Ministry to publish its English version of “Burundi Diplomacy 1962-2012” publication.

The Managing Director of Kenya Ports Authority led a high level delegation comprising of key players from the private sector and government of Kenya to a regional visit to its transit customers. The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Charge d’Affaires to the Kenyan Embassy in Bujumbura where discussions centered on bilateral trade relations and operational matters at the Port of Mombasa. The visits also aimed at apprising the transit customers of the key achievements at Mombasa Port and measures that have been put in place to improve service delivery.
The visit culminated in a Stakeholders’ Forum at le Panoramique Hotel.

CENTRALIZATION OF PROCESSING OF APPLICATIONS FOR KENYAN CITIZENSHIP
The Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Bujumbura wishes to inform Kenyans resident in Burundi of the centralization of processing of applications for Kenyan citizenship. The process of citizenship involves issuance of subsequent documents including certificates and endorsements in addition to filling of records in specific registers prescribed in law.
This Notice is therefore to give directives that in order to standardize the processes involved in citizenship; the following applications MUST only be processed and issued in Nairobi:
The forgoing notwithstanding, applications may be received from applicants and forwarded to the Department of Immigration in the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government for processing.
DIASPORA HOMECOMING CONFERENCE: 18TH-19TH DECEMBER 2014, NAIROBI
This is to inform that as part of delivering on its strategic plan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade will be hosting the above Diaspora Homecoming Conference at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on 18-19 December, 2014 where businessmen will be able to seize the opportunity to exhibit investment opportunities in the country. KENYANS IN BURUNDI CELEBRATE MADARAKA DAY 2014
Kenyans in Burundi converged for a luncheon at the Kenya House in commemoration of the Jubilee of Kenya’s internal self rule on Sunday, 1st June, 2014. The event was organized by the Embassy and the Association Kenyans Living in Burundi (AKB) and graciously sponsored by CFC Life Assurance alongside Kobil Burundi and Safintra Burundi.
In her Madaraka Day Speech, the Chargé d’ Affaires, a.i. of the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Bujumbura, Ms. Njambi Kinyungu congratulated the Kenyans present on 51st Anniversary of the attainment of internal self rule. She noted that a lot had been achieved in the period that should be celebrated.
She noted that Kenya was in the process of implementing the devolved system of government and support was required to overcome the challenges that present in the process of such an enormous undertaking. She pointed out that security was a particular concern given the recent spate of attacks back home and called upon Kenyans in Burundi to share in the effort to secure our nationhood in order to ensure a good legacy for posterity. She lauded the indomitable Kenyan spirit of entrepreneurship and impressed upon them to continue to fly the Kenyan flag high in Burundi.
Also featuring during the occasion were presentations by Francis Mwangi the Acting Chairperson of the Kenya Burundi Business Association (KBBA) whose main agenda is to advance the interests of Kenyans living in Burundi and Michael Waweru the representative of Fountain Enterprise Programme in Burundi an investment programme based on the pooling of resources and whose portfolio included retail, real estate, hospitality, hospital service and education.
The event also doubled up for elections of the incoming governing body of the AKB. The line-up is as follows: Chairperson- Bernard Teigutwo; Vice-Chair- Joyce Kandemi; Secretary- Renson Muguzu; Treasurer- Samuel Munga; Organizing Secretary- John Mulunjye; and Committee Member- Kitale Makosa. The outgoing team was led by Ms. Gloria Nyambok, the Managing Director of KCB Burundi for a one year term.
